One careless shortcut, scaled up, can unravel a life.

In the first chapter we traced how a tiny careless habit — running late, a small lie — can grow until it troubles a whole society. Carelessness, we found, is the root of nearly every problem we make for ourselves.

The question that was left open

So if a careless habit is the disease, what's the cure? What could possibly be strong enough, and simple enough, to dismantle a habit at its root — and reach everyone, in any life, with no special equipment?

The answer is almost disappointingly ordinary. That's exactly why it works.

Every kind of goodness begins with cleaning. All calm begins with ordering. Practised by your own hand, every day, through the ordinary work of living — this is the most powerful training there is for rebuilding a careless habit into a careful one.

Not as a chore. As a discipline of attention — small enough to do anywhere, deep enough to change who you are.

03 First, a way to measure

How do you tell a good act from a harmful one?

Forget the labels for a moment. There's a more honest test, and you already carry the instrument for it: the trace an action leaves in you afterward.

By this measure, any action that leaves trouble in its wake counts as harmful — and the most common source of it is simply carelessness in how we live. Which is why the cure has to start exactly there: in the small, careless acts that leave a residue.

Turn it over — coarse and fine, the gains and the pitfalls — weighing how and why it works.

Put it into action, repeatedly, until it stops being advice and becomes who you are.
